Race to ZERO Competition Entry / 2015 / Roxbury, Boston, MA / collaboration with NESH / sponsored by David Fannon

The US Department of Energy’s Race to ZERO design competition challenges students to strive for net zero energy performance at a residential scale.  As part of Northeastern University’s team for Sustainable Housing (NESH) with students in the architecture and engineering programs, I redeveloped the traditional Boston triple-decker row home to deliver optimal comfort while generating more energy than it consumes annually.

The vacant site chosen would hold eight new homes designed under the criteria of Mayor Thomas Menino's E+ Green Building Program.  As such, the small community would not only provide energy efficiency but also create affordable housing opportunities, offer amenities for the residents of the homes and the larger neighborhood, and raise awareness of the potential for the residential application of green building technologies and techniques.
